One of the most common questions I hear from families planning their Nantucket vacation is, what time of day is best for family photos? It’s a great question, and the answer can make a big difference in how your images look and feel.
When you’re visiting Nantucket, your days are often filled with beach outings, bike rides, ice cream stops, and family adventures. Finding the right time for photos means creating space for beautiful images without interrupting the memories you’re already making.
As a Nantucket family photographer who has worked with hundreds of families, I am happy to guide you on what time of day is best for family photos!

Light plays a huge role in photography. The soft, golden light that happens early in the morning and again just before sunset creates flattering skin tones, beautiful colors, and a relaxed atmosphere. It also means no one is squinting into the sun for your photos.
These times of day also tend to be more comfortable for families. The temperatures are often cooler, the beaches are less crowded, and everyone can focus on enjoying the experience together.
So when you first start considering booking your family session on Nantucket, keep in mind that you will most likely want to coordinate a time in the early morning or late afternoon/evening for your session.

A common misconception is that because you have a lot of sunlight during midday… that would be better for photos! Surprisingly, the best family photos are usually when the light is either just starting for the day. Or alternatively, when it’s fading away in the evening.
During the middle of the day, the sun is much brighter and higher in the sky. While beautiful photos are still possible, families often find themselves squinting, and the popular Nantucket beaches can be much busier. It becomes a little more chaotic for photos, so it’s something I like to inform my clients about before we schedule your session time.
That doesn’t mean midday sessions are off the table. In fact, they can be perfect for a more documentary-style approach. Think playing in the sand, collecting shells, splashing in the water, or enjoying a favorite family activity together. These sessions focus on connection and movement rather than traditional posed portraits. Here are some ideas of what you can do to personalize a session!

One of the best things you can do when planning your session is leave a little flexibility in your vacation schedule.
Weather, beach conditions, and your family’s energy level all play a role in choosing the perfect time. Together, we’ll find a window that works well for everyone and allows us to take advantage of the most beautiful light available.
My goal is always to create an experience that feels easy, enjoyable, and true to your family.

Whether you’re visiting Nantucket for a week of family memories or planning a surprise proposal by the water, choosing the right timing can help create images you’ll treasure for years to come.
So in a nutshell: the answer to what time of day is best for family photos? Sunrise or sunset!
Those moments consistently provide the most beautiful light, the most comfortable experience, and the timeless photographs families love most. If you’re looking to book your family session with me, you can reach out here to connect!
