If you’re reading this, you’re thinking about a multi-generational photo session! I know it can feel like a big undertaking. You’re coordinating grandparents, parents, kids, cousins! Not to mention outfits, schedules, and probably at least one person who is probably complaining the whole time.
But after photographing more than 150 families, I can tell you that it is so worth it to spend the time & effort to document your family.
As a Nantucket portrait photographer, it is such a privilege to photograph families while they are on vacation. There is something extra special about having everyone together somewhere beautiful, slowing down for an hour, and creating photographs you can come back to for years.

The easiest way to make a big family photo feel cohesive is to plan your outfits ahead of time.
You don’t need everyone to match per se. (Unless you have a special article of clothing like the matching sweatshirts below). Instead, choose a color palette that feels natural with the Nantucket landscape.

Yes, we are absolutely going to get the big family photo where everyone is looking at the camera. That one belongs on the wall!
But then I want you to trust me as we start to explore the island and get more documentary style images.
Some of the best magic happens after the “everyone smile!” photo is done. We’ll let the kids run. Grandparents can play with the grandkids. Parents can scoop up toddlers, walk along the beach, or just enjoy being together.

You already got everyone dressed. And got everyone out the door! You coordinated the schedule and checked “family photos” off the vacation list.
So why not celebrate?
Plan a family dinner after your session. Grab a drink. Let the kids stay up a little later. Enjoy the fact that everyone is together in Nantucket.
I put together a list of some of my favorite family-friendly Nantucket restaurants if you need a place to start. Just click here to view it!
